The right packaging is essential in maintaining the integrity of your formula.
Tubes
- Tubes are a cost effective way to package your formula without losing the integrity of your ingredients as this type of packaging minimizes air exposure making it a great option for moisturizers and creams that contain ingredients like retinol and Vitamin C. Tubes work best for formulas that have thicker consistency like that found in many sunscreens, eye creams, body lotions and lip balms. Conversely, tubes are not the right packaging for formulas that are thin or drippy.Tubes offer the right orifice whether your formula has a high, low or medium viscosity. Making tubes the perfect fit for most serums and cleansers.

Pump Bottles
- This type of packaging is great for even, easy dispensing. These can be made either with an airtight or non-airtight top. Using this type of packaging is inherently more hygienic than a jar because the user is not actually touching the product itself – reducing contamination and potential bacteria. Unless you are using an airtight pump these bottles should not be used with products that contain sensitive ingredients like retinol, peptides or Vitamin C. If your formula does contain these types of ingredients it is worth using the more expensive airtight pump to ensure the integrity of your ingredients.

Small Pots
- This type of packaging is meant to be used with products that are applied with only a fingertip or a very small applicator, like a lip balm or other products that do not contain a lot of water. While many eye creams are sold in this type of packaging it’s really not ideal, since jars are not airtight making the sensitive ingredients in many eye creams, like antioxidants and retinol, susceptible to degradation. Also, if these types of products are applied with a finger tip there is great potential for bacteria to spread. A better choice would be a pump or small jar with an airtight pump.

Package Opacity
In addition to choosing the correct package for your formula it is important to also consider the color and transparency of that packaging. Using a transparent container is best if your formula does not contain a high concentration of sensitive ingredients that can be negatively impacted by UV exposure.
